Authorities in Las Vegas say a 72-year-old man called 911, reported people were breaking into his home, and fired a handgun before police arrived to find a person dead in his backyard.

Police arriving a little before 8 a.m. Monday arrested one suspect in a vehicle that crashed into a patrol car outside the home in northwest Las Vegas. His name wasn’t immediately made public.

Officer Bill Cassell says another would-be intruder fled on foot and wasn’t immediately found.
