At around 5:30am on June 27, an unoccupied building still under construction at Lianhuanan Road in the Minhang district of Shanghai city toppled over. One worker was killed. According to information, a 70 meter section of the flood prevention wall in nearby Dianpu River and that may have something to do with this building collapse.
Anyway, here are some sweet pictures of the architectural carnage.
Looks like the piles were only 10-15 feet long buried in sand and mud. They should have drilled those down much further, 50-100 feet, preferrably into the bed rock. The building just fell over cause it wasn't anchored to anything.
And these guys graduate how many engineers a year?
Nice point Ire, but unfortunately, it's more than we do.
Wha---what!? Was it built of legos?
Yep, legos and silly putty.
now they know why they had so many left over bolts
;)
Don't you just hate all those annoying extra pieces you have at the end of the job?
Unlike in Atlanta where a construction company's bridge failure caused a death and now another garage collapse, China takes off the gloves in these cases. I suspect somebody in Shanghai will be dragged before a court in shackles and have some explaining to do. And there won't be slaps on the wrist and petty fines, but possibly a fire squad if somebody is found under the rubble...
(Meanwhile, the Atlanta contractor should be out of business with no insurance company willing to touch him)
"firing squad", as in death penalty that is...
You know it was all caused by the fact that they made it "13 stories" right? 13? Thirteen? Hellooooo?
What I find amazing is how many of the windows still appear to be intact. That and the whole thing isn't just one big rubble heap.
I suspect, the whole building must have sort of 'buckled' in the knees, with the supports giving like a hydraulic system, slowly letting go with the suction of the wet ground holding onto the unsufficient concrete pilings, and then they popped off one by one, and the whole thing just laid down in slow motion!
Boggles the mind. The concrete pilings are broken right off.
Nine people linked to the building collapse, including the real estate developer, contractor and the supervisor for the project, have been put "under appropriate control", said the official Xinhua News Agency Sunday evening.
